Between 2023 and 2024, DRI conducted a research project which analysed the Cost-of-Living Impacts on the Quality-of-Life for Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Migrants in Sussex.

DRI was part of the NHS England Southeast (SE)’s Community Participatory Action Research (CPAR) Cohort 2.

The School of Public Health (NHS England SE) funded CPAR to train and mentor up to 30 community researchers across southeast England, commissioning the following delivery partners:

  • The Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) and the University of Reading delivered the training and mentoring.
  • The Institute of Voluntary Action Research (IVAR) delivered a small number of stakeholder engagement sessions.

At DRI we care deeply about supporting our diverse community members, which is why…

We identified and provided 3 community researchers that started to engage in this activity on the 22nd of May 2023.

The aim was not only to identify challenges but, more importantly, to pave the way for actionable solutions that resonate with the needs and aspirations of the communities affected.

Through this research initiative, NHS England SE, its delivery partners and the community researches involved, contributed to the ongoing dialogue on health equity and advocated for positive change at both local and systemic levels.

The research topic for our research project (Cost-of-Living Impacts on the Quality-of-Life for Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Migrants) were chosen by members of the communities we work with. At the beginning of the project, we asked our community members what concerned them most during the cost-of-living crisis. Three key issues emerged, becoming the core focus of our research:

The quality of life for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants

The mental health of ethnically diverse men

The impact of medical costs for ethnically diverse individuals, families, and staff
