This work stream aimed to learn more about the provision of maternity services for ethnic minority women, hearing the feedback and experiences of birthing women from diverse ethnic backgrounds about the maternity care they had been receiving.
We worked with the East Sussex Maternity Voices Partnership, who are active members of the East Sussex Perinatal Equity and Equality Working Group.
DRI promoted and facilitated a listening session with community groups and representatives from both Maternity Voices Partnership and the NHS.
We got together with participants from minoritised ethnic communities who were either in their perinatal period or within two years post-pregnancy.
The primary objective of the meeting was to gain a deeper understanding of the concerns and challenges faced by these mothers throughout their pregnancy journeys.
The participants were invited to come forward and engage in open and personal dialogues. This collaborative effort aimed to recognise the positive areas in care by the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, but also highlight the areas in need of improvement.
The final report should serve as a guide to understand the challenges that these women faced, and ultimately guarantee that every birthing woman and individual, irrespective of their background, receives a uniformly high standard of care.
