Women’s Walk in Lewes: Exploring, Connecting, and Supporting Local Businesses
Today, we’re excited to share a heartwarming story from one of our Women’s Walk in Lewes, East Sussex.
In September 2023, we gathered at Lewes Railway Station, embarking on a journey along the River Ouse, steadily climbing up hills, passing through woodlands, and enjoying beautiful landscapes.
One of the highlights of our previous walk in Eastbourne was the genuine connection forged among participants, who shared stories and opinions throughout the entire route. This was also an amazing experience in our Lewes walk, someone even remarked:
“You don’t even feel tired because you are chatting and talking with other women.”.
However, there was another highlight worth sharing: our walk became an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange local recommendations, particularly of businesses owned by ethnically diverse community members.
Passing by The Blacksmiths Arms, a charming Jamaican pub in Offham, Mebrak Ghebreweldi – DRI director and walk leader – recommended we make a stop to meet the managers.
Excitement built up as we approached the inviting facade. Well-kept plants adorned the surroundings, and Jamaican flags added a vibrant touch to the outdoor space. Despite being outside working hours, the managers warmly welcomed us, presenting the menu for the ladies to take a look at.
Everyone was very happy and inspired by the success of an ethnic minority-led business in the area. We share this story because it encapsulates the essence of the Women’s Walks project: creating a safe space for women to socialise, explore, disconnect from daily routines, and reconnect with themselves.
